Avijit Mitra MD

Dr. Avijit Mitra is a Mayo Clinic-trained adult psychiatrist with specialized training in child and adolescent psychiatry from Yale University’s Child Study Center. With 22 years of experience in adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry, Dr. Mitra brings a comprehensive, compassionate, and evidence-based approach to patient care. He is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, reflecting his commitment to excellence and leadership in the field.

Dr. Mitra’s philosophy of care emphasizes the integration of medication management with therapy, recognizing that mental health is shaped by biological, psychological, and social factors. He works closely with primary care physicians, pediatricians, and therapists to ensure that patients receive coordinated, holistic care. For children and adolescents, he collaborates closely with families and school systems, taking the time to explain treatment plans and the rationale behind each approach. Dr. Mitra relies on evidence-based medicine, collateral history, and careful evaluation to achieve meaningful resolution of symptoms and improved quality of life for his patients.

Dr. Mitra’s career began with a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University, where he served from 2003 to 2008. During this time, he honed his skills in both clinical care and academic teaching, shaping the next generation of psychiatrists. In 2008, he joined the Department of Mental Health as an attending psychiatrist, a role he continues to hold while also maintaining a thriving private practice in adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry. His dual focus on academic medicine and private practice allows him to remain at the forefront of clinical research and advances in psychiatric care.

Dr Mitra majored with a Masters in Neuroscience, from the Center for Neuroscience at Rutgers University. He attended Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Columbia University, NY. This experience instilled in him a deep appreciation for perseverance, dedication, and the transformative power of education.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Mitra enjoys tennis and hiking, activities that reflect his commitment to health, balance, and wellness. His dedication to service and community was recognized by the Connecticut State Psychiatric Society with an Appreciation Award for his participation on the crisis team during the Sandy Hook tragedy.
